Right now I am own HD Webcam C310 which is installed on Windows 7. The Logitech software for webcam showing me some kind of error when I try to upload photos to Facebook. I know that I have installed the software properly and I logged in as Admin. The loading shows 100% completed but then suddenly prompts an error message saying:

The Facebook can access to my webcam. Is there any help?

It seems to me that the software is not interacting with software properly and due to this it is getting error. You will once again need to check whether the webcam software can access the FAcebook account or not. Also make sure that you are logged in your account. You have said that you can access the webcam from Facebook but it doesn’t mean that the software can access your Facebook account without any issues.

I have been trying to install the Logitech QuickCam SphereAF but couldn’t succeed yet. My system is running Windows XP professional SP3 and I have installed the latest driver v11.10.2030. The installation progress is now asking to connect the new Logitech device. I have connected the device and device is recognized by windows because I can notice it clearly in windows since it is showing USB device detected and read to use. But the Logitech QuickCam Sphere AF installation wizard stuck at “waiting for connection” message. What is the problem here?

Can you see any button on the setting wizard window where you are getting “waiting for connection” message? Is there any button like “next” button? If you are getting any problem with installing Logitech webcam, then you might need to re-install the drivers. If you have any luck, then you can easily Windows will easily recognize and install the device.

As I have seen that there is no NEXT button when the process stuck at “waiting for connection”. The only button I can see is “skip” button which is highlighted. I tried pressing on that button and then the system installs Drivers and then windows opens quickcam saying Logitech is running and it need to install drivers. But due to this error Sphere MP does not recognized.

You just need to know the exact product name and model number if necessary and you can download it freely. If you have connected the webcam and if it is still not connected then you should see a small pop up saying that adding hardware. Click on it to start the wizard and go after the instructions. However if your webcam already came with Driver CD, use that CD only instead of downloading and installing drivers.

According to me the best way to get drivers for your Lenovo ThinkPad T410 laptop is to install system update. You should download system update 4.01 and after that you have to open command prompt and then go to the directory where you have downloaded the system update installation file and then you have to add this command

I had the same problem and for that reason I have called HP tech support and but they didn’t help me. Actually the manufacture is not HP for this thin client, it was actually DisplayLink. So for that reason the HP doesn't list the drivers. I had looked all over the HP site and got nowhere. But when I looked into the DisplayLink , they had the most current drivers for the HP t100 thin client

I have found the t100 driver on somewhere else but no under where it have to be. Actually the driver is posted under MS6000 which is the model of the HOST/Desktop.. I am pretty sure that it would be the compatible driver.

I have configured wnos.ini so as it can auto launch a XenDesktop session when any user login. The fact is, it works fine sometimes but sometimes not. Sometimes it shows error message saying that 'connection reset by peer'. If there is any error, then user have to manually launch the XenDesktop session through the Citrix client which is embedded within the Windows 7. I would like to see auto login but I didn’t find any solution yet.

I hope that most of BlackBErry users might be familiar with the BlackBerry Codes Calculator. Now this applications is updated and for as v1.2. There are several new features and they are:

Log window now supports some text formatting
Can copy log window to clipboard
It only calculates MEP2 by default and all other MEPS calculated only if you specify
Another PRD added and now total is 4
Some other bug fixes.

I tried this new application which had updated to v1.3. I did notice some bug fixes and it Added AUTOPRD function. Do you what this function is?

AUTOPRD function will allow every user who is using this app to save PRD - MEP combination from all phones from where they read code. So this way the user can create a personal database. This database will then helpful to calculate codes based on PRD. But for that there should be saved MEP and PRD codes.

You are still one the v1.3. Actually this software already updated to v1.4 and there are few new things:

First one is Bulk IMEI Calculator support
User can manually add PRD - MEP combination to PRD database.

The applications were updated and some extra features were added after lots of request from users since this is really easy to implement.

You have already seen that there are 2 new features added in v1.4.

Bulk IMEI Calculator Format is very simple. You only need to collect and add as many IMEIS as to a simple text file based on ONE IMEI PER LINE. Make sure that each and every IMEIS correspond to same MEP.

Manually update of PRD - MEP to database for calculation is very useful and don’t think that there will be repetition of codes since even of you enter the same PRD twice, the application will not save it twice.

First of all the app will calculate codes for each MEP and then it is upon you to manually try one by one and find a good one. Hello everyone I have recently updated the Netflix channel and after that updating the Netflix channel I have found mine Netflix channel working very slow and I have found below issue on mine Netflix channel:

While scrolling movies mine Menu screen lag.
Unable to read the Text because this randomly changing from dark to light
Unable to steam movies because Movies not available.
Can anyone help on this issue and so that I can solve mine issue.

Do you have any issue while the internet on your Wii because I think you have issue with the connection itself and so therefore you’re getting the issue? So I would like to suggest you to try power cycling your router and along with this try to reset your internet settings on your Wii and this will help you to solve the issue.

Ok through the below steps on your router and after that your issue will get solved:

On browser type: IP address to access router's administration console.
Now while doing this you will prompt to enter the password to access network settings.
Look for the DNS server settings are specified.
Type IP address for Primary and secondary DNS servers as specified below:
Google IP addresses: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
Now once you fished this save the setting and restart the browser.

I have been using excel on my machine from a long time and I have recently started using excel in mac, in excel for windows it was possible to get the sum, average, count, etc but then I have found that the same thing is not that simpler in mac, I mean that it gives the output for one at a time and we have to select the same from drop down menu, so I just wanted to know that is there a way to customize the same, is there anyone who can help me out??

I don’t think that it is possible to do the same because even I had thought of customizing it but then I have not yet got any success, I have addressed this requirement to them using the Send Feedback from the help menus but then have not yet received a response for the same ,I had found a guy mentioning a solution where he had used a VBA Event macros but then it was not actually helpful. I really don’t think that it is possible within the MacXL's user interface.

I am not very sure that it is possible to duplicate the mac status bar as that of the windows but then I think that you can customize the status Bar and in order to do so just follow the below steps:

First open the excel and then go in to Menu > Toolbars > Customize Toolbars and Menus after that just check out the list on right side of the window and after that just drag the status bar and then format it as you want to
While doing this also make sure that the formatting is shown as well in order to avoid duplication of the commands

Customizing it in this way is possible but then I don’t think that there is a solution to customize it in the way you are willing to.

Yes even I was going to say the same, I have found that Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 is a direct port of the OfficePC 2007/2010 but then here some of the features have not been added as per the MS Corporate Decisions, so I don’t think that it will be possible to customize it as per your desire until the mac comes up with the same.

As far as I am aware it is not possible to customize the Status bar by just dragging and the solution that one has mentioned about the formatting is just not related to the Status bar and I don’t think that there might be some kind of inheritance problem because of the duplicating commands. I completely agree to you, I mean that it is not possible to Status Bar the only thing that you can do for the Status Bar in Excel for mac is just switching it on or off and enabling and disabling the AutoCalculate feature, the solution that you have mentioned above is for customizing the Toolbars and Menus and not for the status bar, and if you are saying that it is because of the decision from the corporate and all then I would like to see the source, in order to believe the same.

I have two WSUS servers - both Server 2003 R2 running WSUS. The first one is connected to the Internet and works without problems. The second is in a secure area with no Internet connection. The only obvious difference between the two, apart from the Internet connection, is that the offline server has its files on a seperate drive (W:\WSUS) and with the online one they are on the local drive (C:\WSUS).

I have copied all of the files from the WSUSContent directory and copied them to the equivalent directory on the offline machine - being careful not to copy the WSUScontent directory itself having read the warnings on this and other sites about permissions. I performed an export from the online server and import on the offline and all patches are shown but are marked as "File not yet downloaded" Fie details can be checked and files are in the correct place amd can be seen in the IIS directories. I have wiped the install and repeted the process with great care, but still cannot make any progress on this.

Any help would be VERY gratefully received!

When I run the 'Who Does What When' report, it only lists the task description, so I don't know which project the task is referring to. See below for example.

You have to click on the minus sign at the start of the Resource name if you want to hide that person's tasks in the report; click on the plus sign if you want to show the resource's tasks in the report. Run the report. In the report you will still see a single line with just the resource's name even if you have hidden the tasks for that resource.

Same problem was occurred with me also and after that I have first thought that problem is with the application setting in my computer but that does not help me to solve this problem. now after that I have tried to solve this problem by reinstalling the Intel application with no luck.

After trying so many thing I have come to know that I have to disable it from windows configuration utility and then I have open window configuration utility and then I have disabled Intel application from there and then when I restart my computer at that time I didn’t get any problem. you should also try this solution.

Lotus Smart Suite 9.8I runs pretty well in windows xp operating system. So if you can dual boot your machine with both the operating system then you will not face this problem at all. In any case, I have heard that if you install Lotus Smartsuite with the "setup.exe" command in the RUN box it works. I was having the same problem as you but later on it got solved.

Thank you very much for the solution but your solution not works for me. I have downloaded and installed Quicktime player in my laptop. Now When I try to run Mp4 video then only black screen displayed on the screen. This is very annoying and I am unable to figure out a way. Please help me. Any more advices are also appreciated.

According to me something went wrong while converting the videos. I was also having same problem. I have first uploaded my FLV videos on YouTube which worked correctly and then I have converted the videos in MOV format with the help video converter but after converting the videos I was having similar problem and then I have converted the videos with the help of AVS4You to convert and after that uploaded videos again and then problem get solved. I

In my computer I have windows 7 operating system and I have installed iTunes 10.5. When I connect my ipod touch 4g with my computer and start taking backup from iTunes at time it freezes. I have read your problem and first I will suggest you to try basic solution and check whether it helps you to fix this or not. You have to right click on the ITunes and then you have to click on run as administrator option and after clicking on that you have to check whether you are getting same problem or not?

Well according to me you should try to solve this problem by doing winsock reset in your computer and after doing winsock reset in your computer your problem will get solved. I am telling you this because I was also having similar issue and after that I have done winsock reset and then my problem gets solved. You should also try this solution and then let me know what the result is.

To reset the winsock in your computer you have to follow these steps. First you have to open start menu in your computer and then you have to write command prompt in your start menu search box and then you have to press enter key. Now after that you have to type netsh winsock reset and then press enter key. Now after doing that you have to restart your computer and after restarting the PC if you see any notification regarding remapping LSP then you have to click on no. after doing that start iTunes and then see what the result is.

To solve this problem you have to follow these steps and then your problem will get solved.

First download Autoruns for Windows.
After that you have to extract the contents to from the Autoruns for Windows.zip file.
After that you have to open autorun and then you have to click on Winsock Providers tab.
Now you have to now check for the update for the items which is from apple.
It will resolve the conflicts.

I use BitTorrent to download content. While using BitTorrent, I was asked for updating my BitTorrent to latest available version.

I want to know if there is any option for smoothing lines in Gimp 2.6. Gimp 2.6 slows the mouse pointer so the user can draw smooth lines. In chicken Smoothie, I get option where I can smooth the jagged lines based on percentage. It automatically clears the jagged lines to create smooth lines.

Gimp 2.6 does not provide smoothing option.First thing, Gimp is not a drawing application, but it is image manipulation software.Gimp 2.6 is the latest version which is stable. Smoothing options are available in Gimp 2.7. But Gimp 2.7 is currently under development, so expect the version you get to have bugs.

There are other drawing applications available like MyPaint for drawing raster Images and Inkscape for drawing Vector Images.
Inkscape provides smoothing using calligraphic brush tools.

The latest version of Inkscape, that is Inkscape has bugs which doesn’t allow it to work with pen tablets. Using older version like Inkscape 0.48 might help. Gimp 2.8 which has yet not released will have the smoothing options in brush dynamics.

I am using Photoshop. I have 2 layers. When I change their positions from default, the color from one layer starts affecting another layer.
The bottom layer has more of Red color in it and the top layer is a basic image. But when I interchange their position a red tint appears over the image layer.

Every level in Photoshop has blend modes. These blend modes are seen in a drop box at top of panel with ‘Normal’ selected by default. By changing it one can get various different effects in their image. I suggest you to change the blend mode of your layers to normal to avoid the red tint problem.

There is difference between special effects and visual effects. Special effects are created using make-up, controlled explosions or Squirting blood using pipes. These does not always need softwares. Special effects can be seen in movies like Final Destination. The blood squirting & Explosions are generated using real materials close to real ones.

If you want to apply such effects using softwares, then they are classified as Visual Effects. They are generated using softwares. They can be seen in Final Destination 5. The blood and Explosions is computer generated and not real.

For creating visual effects for a beginner, one should try Particle Illusion. It provides basic presets for explosion, sparks, fire, particles, etc.

But for creating complicated and high end visual effects one needs to know softwares that allows user to play with particles and develop effects from scratch. Softwares which provide this are Autodesk 3Ds Max, Autodesk Maya & Real Flow.

For the blood effect mentioned in question, one should go for Real Flow as it provides realistic liquid flow. But again Real Flow doesn’t render final output independently. It depends on 3rd party renderers or other softwares like Autodesk 3Ds Max or Autodesk Maya to create Mesh for its renders.

Editing a real photo requires more than changing color. One has to maintain the shadows and reflections of any object. If you are coloring the wall such that it affects the shadows and reflections on wall, it will obviously give sketchy effects.

I fully agree with the above reply, but sometimes just re-installing drivers doesn’t help. You need to unplug Printer from your computer & uninstall drivers. You may need to install printer as it is completely new and being attached for the first time.

Also this kind of problems occurs when the hardware and the software do not match. Maybe you updated your operating system leading to mismatched configuration between drivers and softwares. Try regular updates for printer’s drivers.

Both of you have to download and install the drivers for the devices which are supported by Windows 7. For asus A8N-E motherboard, you can visit the official website of Asus and download the latest drivers which are available for the model of the motherboard which you are using and which are supported by Windows 7. For Acer travelmate 4150, visit the support website of Acer and download the required drivers.

I dont feel it is the driver problem. If a device is not recognized or a driver problem, a yellow exclamation point appears. Is it so ? If yes than check in bios that the chipset is enabled, because if you have an ACPI driver is missing, it is possible that during installation it has switched the sound mute in error.

If there is no yellow exclamation than mark than you need to do some troubleshoot. Right click the speaker icon right on the taskbar and select "Open Volume Control" and turn the "volume CD" substance if it is not.

Heyy guys thanks again for ur suggestions...i have got sound i dont know how, i was randomly downloading sound drives and installin them hoping one would work but my sound is very bad it comes out fuzzy and inaudible...i have the Realtek AC'97...is there any way i can fix it or can any1 suggest a better one?
Also, theres no luck with my wireless, i have no idea how to get that back...

I recently bought the Canon 50D and am having problems now downloading RAW images into CS3. I've updated the drivers for Canon, and tried to update the driver for Adobe but it is asking me for my Serial Number to continue with the upgrade. The problem I have with that is my son through away the box! Now I have no serial number and can't process my RAW files! Can anyone help?

Adobe Camera Raw 4.6 supports the Canon 50D camera in Photoshop CS3.First open Adobe Photoshop cs3 then click on “Help> Updates.” The most important thing is that the program should identify available updates for Adobe Photoshop RAW after clicking on updates then download and update the files automatically. Then restart the Photoshop and open a Canon 50D raw file as normal. Now Photoshop CS3 will recognize and process the image.

If the automatic update does not occur then browse the Adobe support site and search for “Camera Raw 4.6”. Download the installation files from the adobe site. Unzip the file if required using WinZip or PKZip. Open your Internet Explorer browser to "Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats" then Copy the Camera Raw plug-in "Camera Raw.8bi" into that folder. Restart the Photoshop and open a Canon 50D raw file as normal. It will be recognized my Photoshop CS3 and image will be processed.

After performing the above steps if the problem is still unsolved then browse the Adobe support site and search for “Camera Raw 3.6”.Camera Raw 3.6 is compatible in Adobe Photoshop CS3. Download the installation files from the adobe site. Unzip the file using WinZip. Open Internet Explorer and browse to “Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats". Then copy the Camera Raw plug-in ”Camera Raw.8bi” into that folder. Restart the Photoshop and open the raw files as normal. The image will be processed by Photoshop.

So for the last 3 years I have worked on this project off an on using SonicStage 4.3 that came with the Sony minidisc player I bought in 2004. Uptil recently I have never had a problem with it. To simplify, I ran out of room on the C drive and started having the software place the imported cds on an external drive and that seems to have confused the software no end. After running the backup tool and the conversion tool, my collection on the SS software went to pieces. So I decided to try the Windows Media Player 11 to import the cds.
I have ran into a rather odd problem: I can import a cd that has just one artist with no problem. But if I put in a cd-r that has two different artists, I am unable to seperate the two in My Libray. I followed the same procedure that I used with Sonicstage:

(1) Select the Rip tab and the list of tracks appears.
(2) I check the tracks that belong to Band A for the WMP11 to rip. I also edit the Artist information on the first track.

When the software is done ripping, I go to the My Library tab to check on the file. The problem starts when I try to import the rest of the files from the cd that would go under a different artist, let's say Band B. I use the same exact procedure above, including editing the the first track to be ripped artists' name thinking that WMP 11 just place these ripped files in a seperate folder in the My Library...but it don't.

Everytime I try this, the software will rip the entire cd, whether I check the boxes or not, and place all of them under one artist, depending on what artist I put in the first track it rips. I cannot seperate two seperate artists because the software treats every track as one artist. Is there anyway around this? If not, I will just have to find another software.

OK in that case i must say that windows media player is taking every song under one artist. So what you should i so in such situation is that you must look at the windows media player try and edit some of the information of the particular song and then name the particular artist. If it is not getting saved then there is some problem with the library of the windows media player, reload the library again and see if the problem is sorted out. hope that helps in solving the problem.

Google Launches Measurement Lab

Google has launched an effort called Measurement Lab that is aimed at
making it easier to measure how ISPs manipulate subscriber Internet
connections, Google chief evangelist Vint Cerf, co-inventor of the
TCP/IP protocol that underlies the Internet, announced Wednesday.

When an Internet application doesn't work as expected or your
connection seems flaky, how can you tell whether there is a problem
caused by your broadband ISP, the application, your PC, or something
else? It can be difficult for experts, let alone average Internet
users, to address this sort of question today.

Last year we asked a small group of academics about ways to advance
network research and provide users with tools to test their broadband
connections. Today Google, the New America Foundation's Open
Technology Institute, the PlanetLab Consortium, and academic
researchers are taking the wraps off of Measurement Lab (M-Lab), an
open platform that researchers can use to deploy Internet measurement
tools.

Researchers are already developing tools that allow users to, among
other things, measure the speed of their connection, run diagnostics,
and attempt to discern if their ISP is blocking or throttling
particular applications. These tools generate and send some data
back-and-forth between the user's computer and a server elsewhere on
the Internet. Unfortunately, researchers lack widely-distributed
servers with ample connectivity. This poses a barrier to the accuracy
and scalability of these tools. Researchers also have trouble sharing
data with one another.

Windows 7 less annoying, but also less secure?

Microsoft said on Tuesday that regular PC users will be able to test
out a "beta" version of Windows early next year.

Windows 7, the forthcoming operating system, will let users choose to
see fewer alerts and warnings from their computers. Rampant
notifications and pop-up windows alerting people to potential security
risks has irked many users of Windows Vista.

"We had all the best intentions of helping to secure the PC platform
even more, particularly for novice PC users who needed to be
protected," said Steven Sinofsky, a senior vice president in
Microsoft's Windows group.

Sinofsky didn't back down from the major changes in Vista responsible
for the rise in alerts, but he did acknowledge that Microsoft needed
to work earlier and more closely with outside companies to avoid a
similar mess in Windows 7.

"Despite the difficult change we introduced, we did move forward the
ecosystem, making it more secure for end users," he said.

With Vista, Microsoft made some significant design changes to the way
windows and icons look, and also to where certain features and
functions are stashed in the system.

Windows 7 keeps some of those changes, but tosses out others. In an
interview, Julie Larson-Green, a Windows vice president, offered one
small example: Microsoft took the "add printer" feature out of the
quick-access Start menu, but after users complained, the company is
putting it back in Windows 7.

Intel : First Xeon Processor with Eight Cores

Hitachi, NEC to cut 27,000 jobs

High-tech giants NEC and Hitachi said they were cutting up to 27,000
jobs as Japan Inc. buckles under the strain of the global economic
crisis.

NEC Corp. said it was slashing 20,000 jobs worldwide by March 2010 -
half of them regular workers - as it sinks deeper into the red. About
40 percent will be in Japan and the rest overseas, NEC president Kaoru
Yano told a press conference.

Hitachi Ltd. said it would shed up to 7,000 jobs as it forecast a net
loss of 700 billion yen (7.8 billion dollars) in the current financial
year to March. It will try to move full-time workers around within the
company to minimize job losses, company president Kazuo Furukawa said.

"We will take various measures but may not be able to avoid cutting
some regular workers," he said.

NEC announced the job losses after saying it expects a net loss of 290
billion yen (3.2 billion dollars) in the year to March as recessions
in major economies from Japan to Europe and the United States hammer
demand.

"It is regrettable that we have to announce such a big downgrade,"
Yano said. "We must cut waste."

Computer maker Fujitsu Ltd. said its net losses ballooned to 36.1
billion yen (403 million dollars) in the nine months to December, and
forecast it would end the year to March in the red.

"I have absolutely no confidence in the fiscal year 2009," Fujitsu
chief financial officer Kazuhiko Kato told reporters. "I have no clue
what the outlook will be."

Google launches offline mode for Gmail

increasingly reliant on Google's Gmail service then the company's
latest announcement will be very welcome – you'll soon be able to work
with Gmail offline.

This might sound a rather retrograde idea in a connected world but the
point is that with mobility comes a reliance on wireless connections
and if you're a devotee of Gmail's webmail interface, then you'll know
it's useless without a line to the web. But not any more. More after
the cut.

Google is currently rolling out a new Labs feature – Offline Gmail. It
uses Google's Gears technology to download a local cache of your Gmail
folders and contents. If you lose your web connection, Gmail
automatically switches to using this cache, allowing you to continue
working – replying to messages, starring emails for later attention,
applying labels – without concern for when your device will next be
online. When a net connection is once again found, Gmail will
automatically synchronise the local cache with its servers.

The Offline Gmail feature even has a 'flaky connection' mode, which
relies on the local cache most of the time, synching automatically in
the background. In theory, at least, this should speed up everyday use
for those whose net connections are unreliable.

Windows 7, Mac OS make gains

The Mac OS is now hovering around the 10 percent mark among operating
systems accessing the Web.

In its Operating System Market Share report for January, Web metrics
company Net Applications showed the Mac OS at 9.93 percent, up from
9.63 percent in December. The iPhone also trended upward to 0.48
percent in January, from 0.44 percent in December.

The biggest winner in January, however, was the iPod touch, whose
"explosive" growth in December continued unabated after the holidays,
growing 37.5% to reach a 0.11% Internet share...That means that more
than one out of every 1,000 Web hits in January were made from iPod

Use of Windows 7, meanwhile, surged in January after Microsoft
released the public beta of the operating system, the follow-on to
Windows Vista that's due sometime around the end of 2009. The beta
became available January 10 (though not without some stumbling), up to
which point Windows 7 stood at about 0.04 percent. Through most of the
rest of the month, it fluctuated at between roughly 0.12 percent and
0.15 percent. It closed out the month with a jump to 0.23 percent on
January 31, according to Net Applications' breakout on Windows 7.

Microsoft confirms: no beta 2 for

Netbook Sales are on the Rise, but will that hurt

Netbook sales are on the rise, but is it really a good thing? Do
consumers know what they are getting? And is the PC industry really
benefiting from this wave of new found netbook momentum?

According to leading market research company The NPD Group's retail
tracking service; laptop unit volume increased more than 23 percent in
December to 1.9 million units. That growth was propelled by netbooks.
Without netbooks sales laptop PC growth would have been just 9 percent
in December. For the full year laptop sales growth was 21 percent with
netbooks and 16 percent without them.

Netbook sales ramped up during the year. In the first half of the
year, netbooks accounted for less than 1 percent of laptop sales.
While that number rose in third quarter it remained less than 2
percent. Only in fourth quarter, as products became more available and
began to reach the shelves of the major U.S. retailers, did sales
become significant. By December, netbooks accounted for 12 percent of
unit volume, their highest total of the year. Nearly 50 percent of all
netbook sales for 2008 occurred in December. The impact on overall
laptop ASPs was significant. In January, laptop ASPs were $861, by
December they had fallen to $740. Without netbooks price erosion in
2008 would have been much smaller as non-netbook ASPs were $795 in
December compared to the $861 at the start of the year.

So are netbooks cannibalizing the market or just making a commotion?

"Without netbook sales, the laptop market grew 16 percent in 2008,"
said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. "That
16 percent non-netbook growth likely indicates about 50 percent of all
December netbook sales were incremental and about 50 percent were
cannibalistic.

virtual groups would have diverted 25 million financial transactions
directly in Ukraine.

Perhaps even more impressive, one expert says that the year 2008 was
truly the beginning of the cyber-war, especially when tensions between
Russia and Estonia, which saw its saturated networks denial of service
and electrical infrastructure outage. "2008 was the year of cyber-war
and showed that it is possible to make a country vulnerable in a few
minutes [...] it's like a virtual revolution, Russia had embarked on
this path and Other hackers have followed suit, "says one.

Internet Explorer, including the latest IE8 betas and the existing
stable IE7, are still losing market share to its "alternative"
competitors. Microsoft has been eager to push IE7 and more recently
IE8, trying to convince people to use the beta browser in an obvious

working that well for the software giant as December saw the overall
IE share dip down to below 70%, which is still a big majority

of Internet Explorer in the workplace. While we've been calling IE to
be broken for years now, typically businesses and institutions adopt
new software more slowly.

The losses IE has suffered amount to around 10% for the whole year and
represent gains across the board for others, namely Firefox, Safari
and Chrome. All three of these browsers have gained in December with
Firefox exceeding 21% and Chrome coming in above 1%. These aren't
localized figures, and we've seen statistics in the past that show
actual usage of browsers can vary wildly by what region of the world
people are in. Another very worthy competitor Opera seems to be flat
in terms of market growth.

Internet Explorer's drop of seven percentage point since February last
year is a continuing trend. Microsoft lost over nine percent of
browser market share in the preceding two years.

Most of IE's drop in the past year has been in Internet Explorer 6,
which fell from 30.63 percent last February to 19.21 percent this
January. Internet Explorer 7 has gained market share overall over the
same time period, rising from 44.03 percent to 47.32 percent.

indistinguishable from a human.

Computer experts at IBM have invented the technology to be used on
telephone helplines, satellite navigation systems and even on cameras
or iPods.It is so sophisticated that the devices will be able to pause
for effect or cough to attract the users' attention, spelling an end
to the irritating monotone voices that have become a part of everyday
modern life.

The new technology, called "generating paralinguistic phenomena via
markup in text-to-speech syntheses", has only recently been patented.
The software will even be able to react to a situation, telling us to
"shhh" if they are being interrupted or coughing to gain attention.

broadband communications devices, says it is preparing to launch what
it claims is "the world's first 21Mbps embedded 3G router with all the
bells and whistles" with the looming launch of 21Mbps networks

Showcasing the design of its prototype 21Mbps HSPA+ wireless router
(3G21W) at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week,
NetComm says that with the imminent launch of 21Mbps networks, it is
working with partner company, Sierra Wireless, to launch its prototype
211mpbs mobile broadband router.

NetComm's Managing Director, David Stewart, claimed that "when
launched, it will be the first embedded router of its kind to operate
at 21Mbps using the HSPA+ (evolved high speed packet access) standard,
as well as being a fully-functioning 11n wireless router with four
ethernet ports.

"With this capability, the 3G21W will finally enable the true

for use in mobile phones supporting the NFC (Near Field Communication)

Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth revealed plans Friday for Ubuntu
9.10, which will be codenamed Karmic Koala. The developers plan to
bring cloud capabilities to Ubuntu's server edition, boost startup
performance on the desktop, and continue work on the distro's netbook
flavor.

Ubuntu adheres to a time-based six-month release cycle. The next major
release—version 9.04, codenamed Jaunty Jackalope—is moving towards
feature freeze and is scheduled for launch in April. Ubuntu 9.10,
which will be the next release after Jaunty, is planned for October.

The Ubuntu server edition, which was initially launched in 2005, has
been steadily gaining ground in the enterprise, but still lags in
adoption behind competing offerings from Red Hat and Novell.
Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, has been investing considerable
effort into making Ubuntu a first-class server distro. During the
development cycle for Karmic, Canonical aims to strengthen the server
edition by introducing enhanced support for cloud computing.

One plan is to create a set of standard Ubuntu server Amazon Machine
Image (AMI) profiles that will provide a starting point for creating
specialized images. This will help to simplify deployment of Ubuntu on
Amazon's EC2 platform. The developers also intend to integrate support
for Eucalyptus, an open source framework for implementing a
self-hosted elastic computing cluster. The Eucalyptus project, which
is developed by UCSB, will enable organizations to get many of the
advantages of elastic computing in their own data centers, including
the ability to scale down power consumption when load is low.

"A savvy Koala knows that the best way to conserve energy is to go to
sleep, and these days even servers can suspend and resume, so imagine
if we could make it possible to build a cloud computing facility that
drops its energy use virtually to zero by napping in the midday heat,
and waking up when there's work to be done," Shuttleworth wrote in a

Microsoft Gazelle: a new browser

a report on a concept called Gazelle, an application midway between
the browser and operating system. For this project, the team was

now looks for solutions of parental control. To avoid the pitfalls of
any security, the publisher said California seeking a more
comprehensive response to the problem of protecting children on the
internet. To do this, it just created the Norton Family Online
Advisory Council, bringing together doctors, writers and other experts
in the field. This study group aims to develop appropriate tools,
promoting understanding and dialogue between parents and children.

In this regard, Symantec has launched Norton Family Online still in
public beta. This service is currently offered free of charge and
available only in English. Not claiming that a simple inscription on
the site of the publisher, it is composed of an administration
parental line and a control software called Minder Safety to install
on the computer monitor.

Available for Windows and Mac, this utility allows you to remotely
monitor all Internet activities of one or more children. After
creating a profile, more or less stringent will be applied by default
with age. Scalable and customizable, it is possible to moderate in
detail the sites by categories, search filters, the instant messaging
session, access to social groups such as Facebook, but also time spent
on the internet. For added flexibility, the child stuck in these
activities will be encouraged to discuss with his parents and where

Windows XP to Windows 7 upgrades

IT shouldn't surprise many testers that Microsoft has shrewdly closed
the upgrade channel for users who will -- probably sooner this year
than later -- be making the switch to Windows 7. Many who had chosen
to steer clear of Windows Vista and hang on to Windows XP -- by all
rights, a decent operating system, at least for Service Pack 3 users
-- are pondering the nightmare scenario of having to upgrade to and
validate (which usually means, pay for) both Vista and Windows 7, if
it so happens that Windows 7 proves to be desirable or simply
necessary.

This led us to thinking: Windows Vista can run without being purchased
and activated, albeit for a limited time (usually 30 days). During
that time, it behaves as though it were a fully operational trial
edition (except for the Ultimate SKU, where several of the "Extras"
aren't available except after validating). But it doesn't take a month
to install an operating system; so what if a valid XP user could
simply borrow the promotional edition of Vista, if you will, to make
the skip over to Windows 7?

You can't download a trial version of Vista any more that runs on a
physical machine; the trial edition now is a pre-configured virtual
hard drive (VHD) that lets you test the applicability of your existing
software in a Virtual PC environment. So you can't make the hop to
Windows 7 via a downloadable version of Vista. And although you can
download a real, physical trial version of Windows Server 2008 (which,
after all, does have the Vista kernel), you can't install it as an
upgrade of Windows XP...just Windows Server 2003.

So it might seem pointless, at first, to say that the first tool you
need to make an XP-to-Win7 upgrade is a copy of Vista. But the key
here is that you don't need to activate Vista after you've upgraded
from XP to Vista, before you begin the upgrade from Vista to Win7.
This could give hope to XP users who do plan to purchase Windows 7;
all they need to do is borrow a friend's legitimate copy of Vista.

we intentionally used a very old, non-updated Windows XP Professional
virtual machine, with only Service Pack 1 installed. But very
importantly, Office 2007 was also installed. Because this was an old
VHD, we had to activate both XP and Office. But doing so at least
ensured us of an antique-like system in good working order, with real
working applications whose settings would need to survive the upgrade
as well. For the heck of it, we attempted a few tricks to see if
Windows Server 2008 could be made to install as an upgrade. Those
tricks failed, but not surprisingly. We also double-checked for the
availability of an evaluation version of Vista. No such version is
officially available from Microsoft's servers at present.

IBM Delivers Software to Ontario Universities

IBM and the Ontario Centres of Excellence today launched a pilot
project that gives university students, professors, and other
researchers anytime, anywhere access to some of IBM's leading business
software via cloud computing.

Cloud computing is an emerging compute model for delivering and
consuming IT capabilities as a service. This Tools as a Service (TaaS)
technology showcase, which enables researchers to have 24/7 access to
IBM's WebSphere Integration Developer and Rational Software Architect
over the Internet, is a major milestone for the IBM Canada Centre for
Advanced Studies and its partners in the Centre of Excellence for
Research in Adaptive Systems (CERAS).

Early adopters of this pilot include the University of Waterloo, York
University, Queen's University, University of Toronto, Carleton
University, the Ontario Cancer Institute, and developers from the IBM
Canada software lab.

This Tools as a Service initiative will provide the participating
research institutions with tremendous productivity increases, along
with cost, and energy savings. The researchers will have access to
some of the latest enterprise software securely without needing to
upgrade their own hardware systems or expand their data centers, and
without the need for on-site expertise to install and get the tools
running. TaaS provides the end user with sufficient computing
resources to use the software, regardless of the capability of their
own hardware. TaaS is able to preserve users' data from their last
session and restore it so they can continue from where they left off
with the software tools.

slight changes. According to the new schedule Windows update program
will begin on June 28, 2009 instead of July 1, 2009, and users who

January 31, 2010 are eligible for a free Windows 7 upgrade.

Microsoft will allow only 5 upgrade requests from eligible end users
(consumers or small businesses) to upgrade to Windows 7. This means
that a user with 12 upgrade coupons will have to visit the fulfillment
website at least 3 times to order all 12 upgrades. However, a maximum
of 25 upgrades are allowed for each qualifying end user's mailing
address. Customers with more than 25 PCs are encouraged to opt for a
Volume License.

Microsoft had already confirmed that customers can purchase upgrade
media and an upgrade license at a discounted price to move from
Windows XP to Windows 7. Users with a Windows XP Downgrade license can
also now upgrade to Windows 7. However, Microsoft to its corporate

Tuesday, with searches for well-known books and CDs producing no
results.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. ET, searches for "Stephen King" and other
terms on Amazon.com's bookstore returned the message, "Your search did
not match any products."

Comments by users on the Twitter microblogging service suggested the
apparent outage may have begun around 2:00 a.m. ET, with users noting
the Amazon.com search engine was not functioning properly.

The outage did not last long. By approximately 2:40 a.m. ET, the
search engine was back to normal. This time, a search for "Stephen
King" turned up more than 22,000 results in Amazon.com's book store.

economic environment, companies are relying on Lionbridge outsourcing
services to reduce costs and optimize their operations for long-term

Symantec Corp. and the Ponemon Institute, a leading privacy and
information management research firm, today announced the findings of
a joint survey of employees who lost or left a job in 2008, which
revealed 59 percent of ex-employees admit to stealing confidential
company information, such as customer contact lists. The results also
show that if respondents' companies had implemented better data loss
prevention policies and technologies, many of those instances of data
theft could have been prevented.

Of respondents who admitted to taking company data, 61 percent also
reported having an unfavorable view of their former employer. The most
commonly identified kinds of records taken included e-mail lists,
employee records, customer information including contact lists, and
non-financial information. Although respondents were spread across
many different industries, the highest percentage of survey responses
came from the financial services industry.

Additional Survey Findings

53 percent of respondents downloaded information onto a CD or DVD,
42 percent onto a USB drive and 38 percent sent attachments to a
personal e-mail account.
79 percent of respondents took data without an employer's permission.
82 percent of respondents said their employers did not perform an
audit or review of paper or electronic documents before the respondent
left his/her job.
24 percent of respondents had access to their employer's computer
system or network after their departure from the company.

Vista RC1 Service Pack 2 Available

The arrival of Service Pack 2 for Vista is accurate, even though the
Release Candidate of this major update is starting to be sent to
testers. Normally, starting today, all those who have installed the
beta version will receive a warning to update to the new version.

At the end of January, an "Escrow" in the Release Candidate, ie a
draft had been sent to some testers. True RC is ready to be released,
and it contains the state 671 days to put together under one banner.
The same warning given previously is still valid: Service Pack 2 can
not move if the first is not present. This is an incremental Pack,
which is a first for Microsoft operating systems.

Microsoft trying out netbook processors

It sounds crazy to use processors designed for tiny netbooks in data
centers, with their potentially massive computing requirements, but
Microsoft Corp. is experimenting with doing just that -- and it's
finding that doing so may lead to cost savings.

A netbook processor uses one-fifth or one-tenth the power of a typical
server processor, offers about one-third the performance and is
cheaper than server processors, said Jim Larus, director of software
architecture for data-center futures, a unit within Microsoft
Research. That means that even though a data center would require
three times as many netbook processors, the power requirement would
still be lower than that of a setup with typical server processors.

At TechFest, an annual demonstration of some of the technologies that
Microsoft researchers are cooking up, Larus showed off a typical
data-center cabinet stocked with off-the-shelf netbook processors.

The cabinet doesn't require the large fans that are typically built
into such containers. The processors produce less heat because they
consume less power, in part because they offer less performance but
also because they were designed to require as little energy as
possible so as not to quickly drain the battery of a laptop, Larus
noted. The cabinet, which contained 50 dual-core processors, can be
plugged into a standard electrical outlet, he said.

Panasonic, Philips and Sony to establish One Stop

Panasonic, Philips and Sony are currently working with other Blu-ray
Disc patent holders to establish a one-stop-shop license for Blu-ray
Disc products. This license, which covers essential patents for
Blu-ray Disc, DVD and CD, will be introduced in the middle of this
year. The license program will be offered by a new independent
licensing company that will be based in the United States with branch
offices in Asia, Europe and Latin America. The CEO of the new license
company will be Mr. Gerald Rosenthal, former head of IP at IBM and
more recently CEO of Open Invention Network.
"By establishing a new licensing entity that offers a single license
for Blu-ray Disc products at attractive rates, I am confident that it
will foster the growth of the Blu-ray Disc market and serve the
interest of all companies participating in this market, be it as
licensee or licensor." said Mr. Rosenthal.
The three founding companies believe that the introduction of this
simplified one-stop shop product license will stimulate the growth of
the market for Blu-ray Disc products. Any holder of essential patents
for Blu-ray Disc, DVD and CD patents is invited to join this licensing
entity as a licensor and also as shareholder.
The fees for the new product licenses are US$9.50 for a Blu-ray Disc
player and US$14.00 for a Blu-ray Disc recorder. The per disc license
fees for Blu-ray Disc will be US$0.11 for a read only disc, US$0.12
for a recordable disc and US$0.15 for a rewritable disc. As a result
of the efficiencies obtained with the combined license offering, the
royalty rates for Blu-ray Disc products are expected to be at least
40% lower than the current cumulative royalty rates for individual
Blu-ray Disc, DVD and CD format licenses.

Google throws weight behind antitrust

Google Inc has added its voice to the case against Microsoft Corp as
the European Commission probes antitrust charges related to the
software giant's Internet Explorer browser.

"Google believes that the browser market is still largely
uncompetitive, which holds back innovation for users," Sundar Pichai,
Google vice president product manager, wrote in a blog post on
Tuesday.

Google introduced the Chrome browser last year, which has taken little
market share.

Google came out with its own browser, Chrome, last year and Pichai
noted that Mozilla, maker of the popular Firefox browser, had also
objected to the bundling of Internet Explorer with Windows.

Last year, a complaint by another Internet company, Opera, prompted
the European Commission to open an investigation into whether
Microsoft's bundling of its Web browser with the Windows operating
system had stifled competition and innovation.

In their preliminary findings, the European regulators concluded that
Microsoft had indeed given its Web browser an unfair advantage that
has been in violation of European law since 1996.
